I started a section on the web page with some workbooks that I have found at my school. I'll add more as I find them and maybe if you search you'll school you'll see some copies of these lying around in some forgotten corner of your book room. When I can get permission, I'll add some scanned passages.

I use the Coach and the Holt. I also use the released tests from Texas (TAKS), the Florida, Ohio, Georgia, and Virginia.

Do you find that the Coach and the Holt are effective? I've looked them over some, but have not been able to make real use of them in the classroom.

I am in a small school. We have only two English I teachers. We both like the Coach book a lot; however, this year we haven't been able to write in the books, so they aren't as effective for practicing strategies as they were in the past. We are required to do a benchmark every three weeks. We have used the Holt books for that. I don't think the Holt practice tests are as good as the Holt. I am going to send you links for other DPI passages that I didn't see on your site.

Being able to write in the book is a big plus, otherwise you run up a killer photocopy tally. A benchmark every three weeks? Wow! We have no set benchmark in my district (we probably ought to). I gave the form I released test this year and did all the practice sheets that I could find. I have access to one Coach book. Not really effective that way.
Curious to hear from anybody out there what type of benchmark schedule your school keeps.

We use the coach book as well, but they are all worn out and the kids can't write in them, so I have just started using them for the few kids that really need extra help after school. We give a benchmark every two weeks, which I think is way to often and the kids dread it every time. Most of them have just stopped trying and guess. It's awful!

We were fortunate in the past to have a consumable copy of the Coach workbook for every student. Following administration of the benchmarck, we are required to analyze the results. I would attach a copy of an analysis form, but I don't see anyway to to that here. I usually have the students complete the form, so they can see the types of errors they miss. Then, I compile class data to analyze common errors. I have analysis forms for the Holt practice tests, the Coach practice test, and other combinations that we have used for formative assessments.

We've started using Cars and Stars. It is really aimed toward 7th and 8th grade more, but since my readers are on such a low level, it seems to be working out just fine. The thing that is pretty neat about this workbook is the way it sets up the questions. Each passage has 12 questions. Every set of 12 questions are the exact same (inference, main idea, ect.) so that when a student has completed 5 tests, he/ she can look back over their previous responses and easily see which areas they need to work on. The program also has workbooks to work those areas in detail.
Anybody else ever use this program?
