There's a news flash for you. In an article written by Gary D. Robertson in the Durham Herald Sun titled "Schools Abandon 'Gateway' Policy," it is revealed that the State Board of Education no longer think that the EOCs or the EOGs are working enough to make them a gateway - that is, an obstacle that must be passed to be promoted. For high school this means that a student can still graduate. Nobody from my school has instructed me on what that means for passing English I. The article states that the reason the tests were instituted to begin with was to prevent social promotion. The article goes on to state that they feel that it is not working because there are too many exceptions in the policy. Too many waivers. The number of students retained was no different than before. The solution, I think, would be to change the policy to restrict the waiver policy, but instead the board is abandoning the idea of using this test to stop unwarranted promotions. The test still stands, so I am wondering what the rationale is for spending all the money we do on testing if it just doesn't work. My suspicion is that this is really old news and the move of the EOC to English II is part of this process in some way, shape, or form. Read it yourself at: www.heraldsun.com/view/full_story/9826678/article-N-C--schools-abandon--gateway--policy?instance=homethirdleftYour thoughts?

You're an admin and have no clue about Gateways? Really?
The Gateways applied to 3, 5, and 8 only. They were never about HS. The Eng1 EOC was replaced with EngII because there were schools that were rearranging their curriculum to get around freshmen taking the test by teaching Eng1 at Eng IV such that their scores would look better.
It was also part of the shift to Common Core.
I fear for your students.

It is amazing to me how hateful and ignorant people can be (especially when in the same profession) such as the last post from Killian. Most people in education and parents hate testing and find it a necessary evil. Not all testing is the same and states as well as counties differ in the way tests are administered. Now before Killian responds, I would say that I know DPI has requirements and we are required to follow these. With tests and curriculum constantly changing though the comment about fearing for students was completely unnecessary. Many new teachers need resources and help with all the tests given and this is a helpful site as you can see from other previous viewers. If you do not personally find the site useful, you are entitled to your opinion but why post something not useful and demeaning to the author instead of just not visiting the site anymore. We as teachers should be supporting each other - not trying to be superior and beat each other down.

You're an admin and have no clue about Gateways? Really? ... I fear for your students. The word "admin" just means that I am the one who set the forum up. I'm a teacher like anyone else. As far as gateways go, when this post was originally posted, the Eng I EOC was, for all intents and purposes, a gateway. Students had to pass the test with a 3 or better or else they repeated the course, regardless of their grade in the class. So, while the term may not match the jargon used for elementary tests, it still worked and the author of the article did not, in my opinion, have his meaning diminished. I should point out that the ideas you are referring to are not mine. Just an article that I am passing along. You also responded to an article I posted on the HCET site, with the same misunderstanding that the article was my personal viewpoints. I am merely passing along the information as I find it in hopes that I can spark a discussion with my peers. I do, however, wish it to be more of a discussion rather than a personal matter. We all have different viewpoints about education. No need to fear for my students. They have a high success rate on the EOC despite their teacher.

Great rebuttal! You are a lot nicer than I would have been in the face of ignorance calling me out.
